Have a wow! moment, take in the views from the summit of Mt. Wellington. Then drop into one of Tasmania's best adventure MTB trails. The 11km North-South Track is a beautiful, fun, and challenging ride. Suited to intermediate riders.

At the summit, 1271m above sea level, take in the spectacular views over Hobart and its surrounds. Then roll down the summit road and join the North-South Track; 11km of single track, mostly descending, carving through the serenity of enchanting eucalypt forests.

The track is suitable for mountain bike riders of intermediate ability. For the more advanced riders, there are some more challenging features located on side loops, including log rides, drops and jumps. 

The North-South Track is relatively straightforward to navigate. There are direction signs placed along the trail. 

This ride is self-guided, however, if you are interested to have a guide, please let us know. 

After completing the North-South, ride the City Cycleway from Glenorchy back to our South Hobart office.

How much time should I allow for this ride?

The shuttle ride to the summit, followed by the road descent to the start of the North-South Track, allow 60 mins.
The North-South Track takes between 60-120 minutes, depending on your riding ability and stop-offs.
The ride back to Hobart on the City Cycleway takes 45-60 mins.
Overall, allow for 3-4 hours.



Itinerary

  • Meet at our office, 473 Macquarie St, South Hobart. 

  • If your group would like to be collected from your Hobart accommodation or another location, please contact us for a quote and availability.

  • Once at our office, you'll be fitted to your bike, and given a helmet. You'll also receive information about what to expect on the North-South trail.

  • Next, you'll board our minibus and we'll take you up to the summit of Mt Wellington for some super-fresh air and spectacular views (if there are no clouds!). 

  • After the summit experience, we'll descend the Pinnacle Road (either in the bus or on your bike) to the start of the North-South Track. The track starts at a location known as The Springs, which is approximately 720m above sea level.

  • The North-South Track takes between 1-2 hours to complete, depending on rider ability.

  • The ride finishes at the entrance to Glenorchy Mountain Bike Park, at the end of Tolosa St.

  • From here, the ride back to South Hobart along the City Cycleway takes about 45-60 mins. The cycleway is paved concrete and very flat. It's a cruisy ride through Hobart's northern suburbs, takes you under the Derwent Bridge and brings you right into the city. A popular stop-off when you get to the Wharf is Mures Seafood Restaurant, their ice cream cones are delicious and massive!


What to bring

  • Suitable riding clothes. Mount Wellington is well known for changeable weather conditions, so please dress appropriately and be prepared for anything! 

  • Gloves are useful, especially if it's a bit cooler. We have a selection of gloves at the office, if required.

  • A small backpack is advisable for carrying any extra clothing, snacks etc.

  • Water and snacks - all the bikes are fitted with water bottle holders.

  • Mobile phone.


Bike hire

  • Our hire bikes are either high-spec dual suspension or hardtail, with disc brakes, dropper post, and wide tyres.

  • When you book, you'll be asked for your height. This allows us to match you to a suitably sized bike.

  • Groups will be provided with basic bikes tools and a spare tyre tube, in case of a puncture.

  • We provide riding helmets as part of the bike hire package. There is the option to hire knees and elbow pads.


Rider ability

The track is suitable for mountain bike riders of intermediate ability and fitness. It is classified as a 'blue' trail. If you'd like to know more about the trail, please contact us for a chat.


Bad weather

Unless unsafe to do so, this tour will run in most weather conditions. 

A full refund will be made if we have to cancel the tour because of unsafe conditions eg. ice, extreme winds, extreme fire danger or torrential rain.
